...bike station has landed

It's arrived.
Last Friday 7th February 2014, about eight years after the idea was first thought of (worth having - worth waiting for) our bike store & workshop space was delivered at the Concorde Centre Youth Club on Kingsmead Estate.
This part of Hackney now has a solid, secure & safe metal box for tools, bikes and our renewable energy power system. Over the next weeks and into the spring, this facility will be stocked and supplied with what it needs to serve as a quality training space where members of the community will be able to access structured cycle maintenance and cycle riding sessions.
Hackney Marsh Partnership (HMP) and Young Hackney (YH) have been supporting this development with HMP providing the ground space while YH manages key delivery staff.
A healthy number of interested stakeholders has been formed who have been meeting regularly to discuss how to manage and run bike clubs from here

New base to be delivered this weekend...a fine shipping container

This weekend a new shipping container to serve local cycling needs for the area of Clapton Park and Kingsmead estates has been delivered and placed into the Concorde Centre Youth Club yard.  It's been a long time coming. The funding for this was sourced by Interlinkx CiC back in 2008, It came from the REAP grant scheme that was made available to the locality as a way of balancing the loss of the South Marsh to make way for the 2012 London Olympic car park. The original plan was to set up a development facility for skate boarding and cycling activities under the East Cross flyover at the eastern side of Mabley Green on Lea Conservancy Road. This idea got shelved (despite having been supported by a decent grant) due to a technical planning permission issue but happily a centre will open close by; The project under the flyover was to be named 'The Bridge' 'it lives :)

This new space will be hub for cycling enthusiasts to access cycle mechanic training and a meeting place to go on organised, structured cycling trips and tailored to suit coaching sessions for all abilities and ages. This place is set to serve as a day to day cycling provision for those that would rather stay local and as an alternative to heading over to the soon to be opened Lea Valley VeloPark that is just up the road.

Made in Hackney Sound System, sound test passed, room to spare...

Special thanks and respect to all those who made it down to the The Glyn Arms for our sound test and benefit night on Thursday 5th April. We had an interesting night of quality engagements, a contingent from Hackney Homes management arriving with DJ Curtis Taylor spinning out a soulful set. Also witness to the first of many Clapton Park Pedal Bike Club (CPPBC) benefit events were Interlinkx CiC staff Ato and Kevin who welcomed a good number of their peers inside to see and hear what's up. Norman and his partner came in from 'Young Hackney' as did Mark Whyte the leader of Clapton Rangers FC. Fellow long time residents Lynda Holloway and Barry Anderson were perfect hosts for other local residents who came in, some even asked our players to 'turn it up'. All present have the right to say 'I was at the first one'

Made in Hackney Sound System - the stage is set

The next CPPBC event is a "Yoot Ting" at the Pedro Club on Saturday 28th, youth members and "the coolest adults".

...stripes from the neighbour hood

For anyone shaping to come down to The Glyn Arms for this Thursday evenings benefit event with designs on a good night out but pondering on who the heck is *DJ Keir and what kind of sounds to expect; keep an open mind and check my tag and one of my references below. I have previous form :)

For added (amusement?) value, the following pictures were taken in the E5 area, mid to late 1970s. My friends from those days and like me E5 residents, are to be in the building come Thursday. Introducing Barry Anderson, Paddy McNulty, Mark Pearson along with fellow organiser Linda Holloway. Local campaigner and Clapton Rangers FC honcho Mark Whyte and his partner Naomi have said they are looking forward to a good night. They also place value on the chance to pull a positive group together at the same time as celebrating a jam ahead of the Easter holidays. Others set to join in the session are James Cooke MBE members from the Pedro Club and CC Hackney, Hackney Cycling Campaign followers and my colleagues and council staff at 'Young Hackney'. Young leaders to look out for on the night are Interlinkx CiC staff Ato Halm Quashie and Kevin Cabey

Hackney Cycling Campaign - event supporting email

An encouraging email has been sent out by one of Hackney's cycling dons; Trevor Parsons:

Subject: [hackney-lcc] benefit for new cycling club in Clapton Park on Thursday

A new cycling club is being started in the Clapton Park area of
Homerton: http://claptonparkpedalbikeclub.blogspot.co.uk/

Keir Apperley of Interlinkx CIC, which is promoting the new club, says:
"Young people in the area love their bikes and are knowledgeable about
them. They've been asking for a club to be set up and now we're going to
do it."

Clapton Park Youth & Community Pedal Bike Club is kicking off with an
inaugural benefit and social night at the Glyn Arms on Thursday.

Flyer:

Keir adds: "It's free to get in. We'll put the bucket round, and it will
be good to raise some money, but the main point is to bring people
together and show support for the new club."

Interlinkx CIC is dedicated to breaking down territorial divisions
between young people. For several years it has run cycle maintenance
sessions on Nightingale and Fawcett estates.

Keir himself will be DJing, along with guests, and promises "rockin soul
jazzin beats global soundz funkin grooves classic noise", no less.

The night runs from 7pm to midnight this Thursday, 5th April 2012.
